Session #1 Online Book Discussion: Questions

Welcome to Session #1 of our online book discussion!!

After reading, We Said, They Said: 50 Things Parents and Teachers of Students with Autism Want Each Other To Know by Cassie Zupke, what are your thoughts on the following statements:

Question 1 - On page 5 the author says, "After all we've been through, I'm expected to give him over to someone I don't know. I'm supposed to trust you to keep him safe and meet his needs, even though he may act like no other child you've ever had in your classroom..."
-As a parent, do you find it difficult to trust teachers and school staff?
-Is there anything we can do at Thames Academy to help develop a sense of trust between you and our program?

Question 2 - On page 17 the author indicates that parents are looking for teachers to "...teach us something new. We need more than the typical set of parenting skills, and we need them now."
-Is this true for you? Are you hoping for teachers and Thames staff you provide you with new techniques, suggestions, ideas for working with your son/daughter? If so, what is the best way for teachers to offer these suggestions while still respecting your experience and insight about your child?

Question 3 - Ono page 34 the author mentions "...self-defense mechanisms that's enabled us to face each new day..."
-Does this idea resonate with you? Have you developed self-defense mechanisms that allow you to maintain your sanity when things get difficult? Can you share some ways that you relax or cope with challenging situations with your son/daughter?

Please comment in the  box below on any or all of the above questions. When responding, please copy and paste the question you are answering first, so we know which statement you are referring to.

I look forward to an interesting discussion!

Please continue reading the book and we will discuss pages 43-64 on Thursday, September 18th!
