organization, and time management. Successful college students utilize this skill set
effectively to manage academic, social, and emotional tasks. This session will provide
participants with a brief overview of what executive functioning is, current research on
adolescents’ brain development, and how to promote the growth of these skills in young
adults. IECs will learn 10 basic tasks which require executive functioning proficiency in
college, and tools to help students and families promote executive functioning success at

Supporting Parents of
Students with LD During the
Transition Process to College
As students with learning disabilities apply to colleges/transition programs, their parents
need support by IECs to ensure a smooth transition process for the entire family. Parents
and caregivers who have been the primary advocate in high school take on a new role in
college. In this session, IECs will explore the transitional issues and anxieties of parents and
caregivers as they learn to “let go.” IECs will learn tools to give parents that will empower
and promote the independence and self-advocacy skills of their child. Skills and strategies
will also be discussed that can lessen parent anxiety and promote parent self-care during the
first year of college.
