Thames Academy students enrolled in Jennifer Sullivan's sociology course, Visual/Virtual World: Exploring Sociology in a World of Images, have a very creative assignment ahead of them this week...
Students watched the TED video by Shea Hembrey How I Became 100 Artists (below) and will be trying themselves what the artist in the video attempted - creating an imaginary artist, name, bio and type of artwork the artists creates. For extra credit, students may actually create the artwork their imaginary artist makes and take a picture of it to show in class. The assignment is for students to create 3 such artists!!
For example, students might create an imaginary artist named "Sally Smith" who is a young artist living on the shoreline in New London, CT. Sally has a passion for marine ecology and prefers to only work with materials found on the beach, both natural and unnatural. Sally's artwork is a statement about beach pollution and so she incorporates these elements, both natural and man-made pollution, into her work. (If students actually create a piece of artwork using beach materials and take a picture to show in class they will receive extra points!).
