Strategies to Help Your Son/Daughter's Math Anxiety

We are concluding week 3 of the spring semester and you may be getting panicked calls or texts saying "Help! Math is getting hard! What do I do?"

This is normal!

All Thames math courses begin slowly by reviewing content that your son/daughter most likely learned in high school. Now that students are moving toward their first math exam, the math content is moving forward and your son/daughter may be learning material for the first time.

Students who have sailed through the first weeks of the class are now beginning to be challenged. As a result, students are doing what they do best and turning to you for help.

"Mom or Dad, help me!"

If your student is experiencing math anxiety, please encourage them to utilize the support services that are in place at Thames Academy listed below:

* Professional math tutor who has appointments in Montauk House 2x week during Math/Writing Lab.

* Many students have created a peer tutoring program and help tutor each other in the evenings

* Students can ask the math instructor for individual help outside of class during his office hours. His office hours are Wednesday 2-4pm and Thursday 11:30 - 1:00pm. He also meets with students as needed by appointment.

* Students can use the tutors in the Mitchell College tutoring center on uppercampus which is open 5x week

* Students can ask their academic advisor, Community Assistants or other Thames staff for math help
