Look Inside the Classroom: Oct. 5-9



This week at Thames Academy, the 3 college-level courses will be covering diverse and interesting topics. Take a look inside the classrooms at Thames Academy to see what your son/daughter is learning this week:

Intro to Sociology (Jennifer Sullivan, Instructor):
-Students are learning the 6 Agents of Socialization as well as Manifest Content and Latent Content
-Students are defining social roles, gender roles, role set, in group and out group
-Students will define their own achieved statuses, ascribed statuses, and master status
-Students will explore theories of identity development (Erving Goffman, etc.)

Critical Understand of the Graphic Novel (Ron Samul, Instructor):
-Students are learning the definition of Aesthetics
- Students will consider what makes comics an art form
-Will explore artistic rules and see how many modern graphic novels break those rules
-Students will explore topics through hands-on learning with comic books

Literature and Liberal Studies (Melissa Shafner, Instructor):
-Students are reading the short story "Ake Dah."
-Students will answer questions each class period to improve their Reading Comprehension & Critical Thinking skills
-Students are continuing to revise their three submitted assignments focusing on the skills of editing and the written process
