Committee & Activities Fair - TONIGHT!

Please encourage your son/daughter to visit the Committee & Activities Fair tonight in Moorings dorm!! It will be held from 7:00pm -9:00pm. All students are required to attend and check-in. They do not need to stay for all two hours.

There will be tables and flyers which represent the committees students can join at Thames Academy. Students are required to join one committee, but they can join more than one if they want!!

We tell the students - If you don't see something that interests you, why not think about starting your own committee?? We had great meeting today and discussed some of their interests, hobbies and passions. Students already have ideas to start committees such as Accapella Group, Martial Arts, Zumba, Swimming, Cartooning and Script writing!

See you TONIGHT (Wednesday) at 7:00pm - 9:00pm!

Rainy Weather? Try A Dorm Room Workout!

We hope the weather will become weather and students can get outside to go for walks, go for a run or play basketball and tennis. When the cold or rainy weather is a deterrent to going outside and getting some exercise, your son/daughter can still stay healthy and get fit inside their residence hall! Take a look at this great article on easy and fast exercises that college students can do without leaving their dorm room!

"You say I'm messy. I say my things are arranged in an abstract manner intentionally, as part of my unquenchable thirst for creative expression."

"If plan A doesn't work, there are 25 more letters in the alphabet. You're good."

"I'm unreliable, disorganized, inefficient, unmotivated and immature. But I'm fun."

8 Local Hikes You Have to Try! Guest blogger: Chris Scott

Local Hike Guide

Although not known for its outdoors, Connecticut has plenty of options for those willing to look.

Bluff Point State Park
Bluff Point State Park
Distance from Thames: 10-15 minutes
Address: Depot Road, Groton, CT 06340
Description:  Bluff Point State Park offers a scenic walk around the Connecticut shoreline. The main loop is about three miles long and runs through the woods and right on the shore. Elevation gain is minimal which makes this hike great for all ages. Wonderful vista views of the Long Island Sound, a beach and great aviation watching as the Groton-New London Airport is nearby. This trail is also a popular horseback riding trail so be on the lookout for horses.
Things to do nearby: The free Submarine Force Museum location at the Groton Sub Base is a wonderful attraction.  Mystic is also close by and offers a great array of dining and recreation options.

Must See TED Video!: In the key of genius

Born three and a half months prematurely, Derek Paravicini is blind and has severe autism. But with perfect pitch, innate talent and a lot of practice, he became an acclaimed concert pianist by the age of 10. Here, his longtime piano teacher, Adam Ockelford, explains his student’s unique relationship to music, while Paravicini shows how he has ripped up the "Chopsticks" rule book.

This short TED Talk is a MUST SEE! You will be amazed at the musical talent of this young man. Watch and then share this video with your friends.

Inside the Classroom: Cram.com used to help students study

Thames Academy teaches students college readiness skills including how to prepare and study for exams. Thames Academy holds midterm and final exams in some of its college level courses and the instructors embed study strategies into these courses.

Introduction to Sociology, which is taken by all Thames students is a 3 credit college level course with a midterm and final exam. This semester Thames faculty, Jennifer Sullivan, is using an innovative, fun teaching tool to help students prepare for their upcoming exam.

The picture above is from a website called Cram.com. This website allows students to create virtual flashcards of key terms, hear the flashcards being read aloud, and includes 2 games to help students learn the flashcard content. In Sociology class yesterday, Oct. 9, students used the above matching game to begin studying terms for the upcoming midterm exam. Thames instructors know that repetition and small, manageable chunks of information help students better retain information.
